Artist's Comments

This picture was drawn to be my deviation advertisement for the Summer Rurouni Kenshin contest in tribute to Hakubaikou :iconhakubaikou: Because I know that the best way to get lots of people to see a message is to put it in a deviation. The contest has officially started now. The theme is 'what you mean to me.'

You'll find everything you need to know about the contest at this site: :iconforhakubaikou:

It is also an entry into the other hakubaikou contest being held by :icononetruelove: The contest info can be found here: [link]

The idea is to draw something inspired by Haku's work or a work from her fansite. Well this was inspired by any image Haku drew of Tomoe... she helped kept my love of Tomoe alive as well... Also, I derived inspiration from this image:
[link] I always loved it how Tomoe was wrapped around him with that blanket like shawl... so I wanted to do something similar. I also got inspiratin from one of the cover pictures... can't remember which one though. Sorry.

My goal with this picture was to put lots of delightful details into it and inspire others to want to draw RK as well. I hope it is working.

The idea behind the picture is a complicated one to get across, but I am going for a more symbolic picture showing what Tomoe meant to Kenshin and how she changed his life. I have him turning... to represent turning away from the hitokiri, and he is swiping the blood off his blade because as a rurouni his sword is not covered in blood. I also have the blood turning into white plum, which is Tomoe's scent, to show that it was Tomoe who made that change. I have a dragon on his shirt because he is a dragon symbolically, and the shawl he is holding that is wrapping around him is meant to be Tomoe's, though I made it bigger than normal and wrapping around him to show how in his heart, she is larger than life and her love is wrapped around him. I thought having things drawn to look graceful would help to show that the transition into a rurouni was without strife, easy natural and beautiful, unlike his becoming a hitokiri. His eyes are blue, but they are also golden in the center to show he isn't quite either one alone, but both the rurouni and the hitokiri... I am also drawing the hair tie not quite holding his hair yet to once again show that transition from one to the other. In a literal sense, the picture makes very little sense, but that isn't what I was going for, so I hope that this all makes sense to you and enjoy.

Good things so far: The flowers look gorgeous. I like the blue hue for the shade, it makes them look soft like the petals shoud be, so you don't need to fix anything there. His hair is also coming along very nicely, but you're beastly at hair you already know you don't need to work on that. I also like the ribbon in his hair how it wraps around, very attractive. :aww: It looks nice too.

Pointers: Maybe it's just because you haven't finished yet but I can't figure out what he is doing. Is he sitting? I know there's a cloth of some sort wrapping around him. It seems a bit confusing. I'm sure that will change after you color it though. ^^
Overall it's coming out great. I don't know what color you are doing the cloth but I would like to see his shirt either be navy blue or a deep dark red, like a mahogany. He's so pretty!

^^; Er, it's plums not plumbs. But I know what you were saying. ^_^

Oh I like this very much! It's inviting to viewer, hopefully they'll want to enter the contest. What is it Kenshin's holding in his left hand? I can see it's not his scabbard. Maybe a flower? If it is, will it be a hakubaikou? I love the loose ribbon from his ponytail and the color goes well with his eyes.

He reminds me a little like Cutter from Elfquest. :D

Will there be words on there? I'm wondering about the flowers, since they are sakuras and I know you were probably not going for realistic colors. Hmmm I guess pink sakuras might be too much. But you're the one with a vision in mind.

Great job so far.

Don't worry if you can't see yet... I haven't finished... Oops, I'll fix that title. They are white plum blossoms, I looked up what they look like, and they look a lot like cherry petals... and white cherry blossoms are actually quite common. I don't know Cutter, is it because of his nose? Thank you.

Alright. I will start with the fact that it already looks amazing, like most of your works.

Alright...pointers. The color choice is great so far...however they are a bit sharp. I suppose layering more shades on top might soften them up. I know you are still working quite a bit on that. The ribbon still seems a bit stiff and up near is mouth, it does notfeel as if he truly has it gripped between his lips. I get the sensation it is about to fall out at any moment. The hand you have drawn so far is nice. It actually looks like the delicate creation it is meant to be. The colors and the tones of the top of the hair seem wonderful so far. You make them look like individual strands. However, the hair itself seems a bit off center on the head.
The flowers look great so far. You may want to vary up the positions of the flowers more so that not so many are facing forward. That way, the flurry of flowers would look more natural. The arm holding the sword looks a little far forward and at an ackward angle to be a physically possible position. I think that might be because there is more of his face showing than should for how far he has his back turned.
How it looks like you are doing the flow of the blanket seems like it is correct.

I think I will be quiet now before I get myself in more trouble.

Cutter is an elf with wolf blood in him. He's a chief of the Wolfriders. :D Elfquest is an American comic book drawn by a woman named Wendy Pini. You should read it. It's the face that got me think of Cutter.

Ahh white plum blossoms. Very pretty.

 at remembering the title.

That's turning out really pretty! You've got a very unique style in drawing eyes and his features - and it looks so lovely. Though I'm not sure about his right hand with katana - seems like his katana is broken... probably because it's still just a sketch. And really, position of his hand is weird, though if you're going to draw a sleeve - it might be no problem. Still the picture looks great and very promising!

lovely hair, that's always your strong point..but the colours are a bit sharp. The flowers are very nice, I'm cringing at the amount of work in the details. kudo's to you.
My biggest question is,(even in all my piencs) what is he thinking? He looks very pretty and doll like at the moment..not getting any emotional cues..and hakubaikou is an emotional subject in every aspect of RK.

Okay, that's for the critiques..hope haven't shot my mouth off..:)

That is why I am asking for your thoughts now... it isn't done at all yet at all,and this gives me good direction on where to go. You're right... I don't have much by way of expression on his face... that is easy to change with an twist of the lips and a shift int he eyes... So I will make that change... now I just have to figure out what kind of expression to give him... Do you think that I should use subdued or vibrant colors for this?

Yeah, the light lines are the original quick rough sketch... no line art there. So I am sure that there are plenty of bloopers there... and it is nice to have them pointed otu for me so I don't have to find them myself. I think I need to draw the blade going the other direction... but my dyslexia is making it difficult to tell... what do you think? And the arm, do you think it should be lower?

Thank you very much for all the pointers. It is in the early, very unrefined stage right now, so there is plenty wrong with it... and it is helpful to here other people make those suggestions. The hair itself is off center in his face... hmm. I will look into that. The position of the other arm, you think it ought to be lower... and you think I should turn the body so not so much of the back is showing? I also appreciate your suggestion with the flowers... I felt there was something missing in their movement but couldn't place it. I appreciate all the critique. Feel free to point out things to work on all you want. I usually post a finished piece and then ask for critique, but by then the picture is done and all I can do is try to remember it for a later piece, I feel that getting feedback through the process to help me direct the work is far more useful, and at this stage, there is plenty to talk about, and it is easy for me to actually take the suggestions to practice with the picture. I welcome good hard feedback... especially when I've just started.
